President Rodrigo Duterte led the inauguration of the largest treatment and rehabilitation facility for victims of illegal drugs in Mindanao, known as the Northern Mindanao Wellness and Reintegration Center (NMWRC) on August 3, 2018.
Located in Barangay Casisang, Malaybalay City, Bukidnon, the NMWRC is built on 50,000 sq.m lot donated by the local government of Malaybalay City. The facility is donated by the Friends if the Philippines Foundation (FPF), with floor area of 11,252 sq.m.
In his message, President Duterte reiterated that his campaign against illegal drugs will remain unrelenting despite the criticisms.
“I am going to build a city, not really a rich one but a city that can provide comfortable lives and security,” PRRD shared, as he reminisced his term as Davao City Mayor back then, focusing his campaign against crime and illegal drugs.
According to Sen. Juan Miguel F. Zubiri, “The NMWRC is very different from the obsolete rehab centers as we have known before that looked more like jails rather than a place to be cured and be healthy.”
He elaborated that NMWRC has no bars and no detention walls, instead it boasts its modern wide rooms and halls, fresh air and gardens, and modern gym, sports facilities and equipment for getting healthy and fit. “They are not here to be punished, they are here to be cared for,” he added.
DILG 10 Regional Director Arnel M. Agabe expressed support to the project saying that this is a major leap not only for Region 10 but also for Mindanao in the combat against illegal drugs.
“We are glad that Northern Mindanao was selected as the location of this facility. We are looking forward for the success of NMWRC’s services it could offer to our citizens.”
